Euclid OH Tinkers With Districts to Elect More Minoriities

I’ll have more on this DOJ action later.

The city of Euclid and Euclid School Board have faced lawsuits in recent years from the United States Department of Justice for unfair voting practices, citing that it was difficult for black residents to win seats on City Council and the School Board.
Today, the city and school board are still looking to have more equal civic participation among whites and blacks.
The proposed solution for city council, accepted by the U.S. Department of Justice, was to reorganize the wards and council seats, from four wards and four at-large to eight smaller wards and an at-large council president. Council members serve four years, with staggered terms ending every two years, determined by even- or odd-numbered wards.

North Carolina Republicans makes absentee voting easier

North Carolina codified the no-excuse absentee status to request mail ballots and allows new ways to put absentee ballots in the hands of voters.  More at Washington Post.

The bill actually makes it easier to vote by absentee ballot.
North Carolina was already a no-fault absentee state, meaning a voter
didn’t have to offer an excuse to receive an absentee ballot. The law
codifies that, and it requires absentee ballot request forms to be
posted online; state parties and voter registration groups can copy the
request forms, too. The law even allows county boards of election to
deliver absentee ballot request forms and the ballots themselves to
voters who are disabled or ill. Those who cast absentee votes won’t have
to show an identification, according to Section 4.1 (It did not escape
state Democrats’ notice that more Republicans vote by absentee, while
more Democrats cast early ballots).

“Lumbee Elections Now in Doubt”

 Link.

“The filing period for candidates for the the Nov. 12 Lumbee Tribal Council election ends Friday, but there is now a question of whether there is money to pay for the elections.

Carvicous Barfield, chairman of the tribe’s Elections Board, said Wednesday that she was recently told by Tribal Administrator Tony Hunt that there is no money available to fund an election. She said when she asked when money would be available, Hunt told her he didn’t know.”

Another deceased Pueblo County voter receives a “voter ID” card; County Clerk Bo Ortiz says he doesn’t know why

Ortiz insists there’s no evidence to indicate anyone has committed voter fraud… “I can’t imagine that anybody would think that it’s worth it.”

The Pueblo Chieftain reports:

But why was a deceased 91-year-old man mailed a card? Ortiz said his office compares names with the Department of Public Health and Environment, which tracks those who have died. Ortiz said he doesn’t know why the card was mailed to Knez.

Curtis said she worries that someone could have gone through her mail, which she says has happened before, and stolen her father’s ID card. “I think identification, ID, driver’s license, whatever you have should be shown along with that piece of paper. They’re just assuming that’s you. That’s not right,” Curtis said.

KRDO-TV also learned that a 79-year-old woman, Helen Lucero, from Pueblo was sent a yellow card, more than a year after she passed away.

What “evidence” of voter fraud does Ortiz think there would be if Mr. Knez or Ms. Lucero “voted,” or rather, if someone else fraudulently voted using their paper ID cards?  Certainly the fraud wouldn’t be detected at the polls, and with zero chance of being caught, one can “imagine” any number of fraudsters might “think it’s worth it.”  They wouldn’t be the first.

“The Latest Evidence of Voter Fraud… and Discrimination”

 National Review Online:

This is the first time in the 20 years that the NVRA has been in force that a conservative group has sued to enforce Section 8, while liberal advocacy groups have filed many cases to try to stop election officials from cleaning up their registration lists, a practice which they foolishly label “voter suppression.” . . .

Given the error-ridden analysis of the district court judge and the prior case law that is directly on point, this should be a slam-dunk win for Davis. Eric Holder and his Justice Department are nowhere to be found in this case, and he never said a word about this real example of
modern Jim Crow when he visited Guam last year.

The “Voter ID Plaintiff” Search Party: Day 3

The ELC Search Party is deep in the heart of Texas looking for our perfect Voter ID Plaintiff.  No luck yet, but we need a find a Democrat who is willing to loudly complain that there aren’t enough options if we are to have any chance at putting a stake through the heart of photo ID.  There is no pressure because we absolutely intend of filing lawsuits for the rest of the decade despite the Supreme Court ruling on voter ID.

Okay, how about Lucy Alvarado, an independent Democrat.

Lucy Alvarado, who leans Democratic but said she tries to be independent
during general elections, said the state allows enough options that
people shouldn’t complain.

“People shouldn’t complain.”  Moving on.
