NAACP: Voter ID Fight Like “Great Civil Rights Battles”

Fox has more.  One big difference – in the 1960’s the majority of the American people agreed with the NAACP.  Not anymore on Voter ID.  Another difference – in the 1960’s the battle was about justice and equality.

The modern fight against Voter ID enables lawlessness and, worse, permanently disconnects a group of Americans from the mainstream of American economic life.  I’ve had to use my ID three times this week already – to board a plane, to check into a hotel, and to rent a car.  Obviously those activities aren’t constitutionally protected, but rather than keeping those without ID’s in permanent second class citizenship, Voter ID opponents could be working to help people obtain the free ID’s so they can fully participate in the American economy.

Questionable Registrations in New Mexico

New Mexico has the Taos Hum, and lots of strange registrations.

“The canvasser for Martin Heinrich for Senate stood at my door. He asked if “Jennifer Wangler” was home. “”No one by that name lives here,” I told him. “She’s registered as a Democrat to vote from this address,” the Heinrich canvasser insisted. “Never heard of her,” I replied. He showed me his clipboard, with a printout of the Democratic voters on our street. There she was, a complete stranger, registered to vote from our home address.

My wife and I have lived in the same house for 22 years. No one has resided with us except for some wonderful cats, none of which we have ever registered to vote. The previous owner lived in Pennsylvania and rented this property to a couple of English emigres whom we know. They are not named “Wangler.”

I called the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office to report this situation. I was told that I would have to go to court to get it cleared up. “

Meanwhile, New Mexico is being told they aren’t allowed to remove deadwood from the rolls.

Military Voting Resolution in Georgia

“A federal judge has ordered Georgia’s Secretary of State to extend the deadline to accept absentee ballots from military service members, their families and citizens living overseas in the event of a primary runoff election on Aug. 21.

The Justice Department sued Georgia last month over the issue. In an order issued Thursday, U.S. District Judge Steve C. Jones says “it is beyond dispute” that the state will violate election rules under the current system.”
