Armed Services Week at the Federal Voting Assistance Project continues through July 7. FVAP is asking all Americans to do one simple thing – if they have friends and loved ones overseas, ask them this week if they have done everything they can to request an absentee ballot – and they can do it right now so they will have one for the fall. Call your friend or loved on THIS WEEK and tell them to go to FVAP’s webpage which will easily guide them through the process. You can find it at www.fvap.com.

Abigail Thernstom on Tim Scott
Abby Thernstrom on Tim Scott’s election in National Review.
“Tim Scott will not be the first black Republican to secure public office, assuming he takes the district in November. His predecessors, however, have been few and far between. Many on the left will continue to describe American race relations as basically unchanged since the days of Strom Thurmond; true patriots know differently. And Scott’s victory is welcome evidence that of course they’re right — if we needed it.”
Historic Election in SC: Scott defeats Thurmond
Strom Thurmond’s son loses the GOP runoff for the First Congressional District to Tim Scott. The district has been represented by a Republican for decades. This is more evidence that the new south is very different from the old south. The Post and Courier has more.

Port Chester elects a Hispanic
Port Chester elected a Hispanic candidate in town elections Tuesday. A story is here. A cumulative voting remedy was in place that allowed voters to cast multiple votes for the same candidate. Congratulations to the lawyers at the Justice Department who worked so long and so hard for this day.
