Pennsylvania Voter ID Plaintiff “Happy As a Clam” She Now Has Photo ID

“The day after a judge upheld Pennsylvania’s new voter identification law, the lead plaintiff in the suit seeking to block the law went to a PennDot office and was issued the photo ID card she needs to vote.”

Huh.  As the judge ruled and this development confirms, the complaint always relied more on the 93-year-old Mrs. Applewhite’s emotional appeal than fact – and Judge Robert Simpson acknowledged, “I do not have the luxury of deciding this issue based on my sympathy for the witnesses.”

Too bad for the anti-ID crowd, which prefers sympathetic figures over facts.  The star of Team Obama’s “Gotta Vote” video, Dorothy Cooper of Tennessee, is another little old lady alleged to be a victim of Voter ID disenfranchisement who, it turns out, was merely inconvenienced on her way to successfully obtaining an acceptable photo ID.

Lessons learned:  Inconvenience is not disenfranchisement.  Not currently having an ID is not the same as being unable to get an ID.  And if 90-year-old ladies can get Voter ID, anyone can do it.

Artur Davis on the Administration’s Exploitation of Race

A blistering piece by Artur Davis at National Review, including Obama’s use of race in the attack on voter ID:, all from a former Obama supporter:

“Enter Joe Biden in Danville, Va., on Tuesday, before a crowd with a large African-American presence. In forced colloquialisms, the vice president warned the audience that Republicans would “put y’all back in chains.” In the hours since, Team Obama has scratched hard to find a different subtext to his statement, but their mincing of words has only added insult to injury: Every African American in the room knew full well whom “y’all” referred to, and what chains meant — it’s one of the clearest codes in racial politics in the black community and has been for a while. At worst, the word “chains” signifies a retreat to a society where a person’s skin color amounted to a prison. At the least, the word bluntly and outrageously equates ordinary conservatism with racial viciousness.”

Majority of Every Demographic Supports Voter ID – Except Ideological Liberals

An amazing poll by the Washington Post.  A majority of every demographic supports voter ID -except those self-identifying their ideology as liberal. (Which of course explains why the Justice Department is trying to stop Voter ID.)    And even 48 percent of liberals say they support Voter ID!

This demonstrates why it is dangerous for Voter ID opponents to push this issue – there will be political ramifications in November.  Voter ID has broken containment.  The more we hear about Voter ID, the more damage it does to Democratic Party interests.  And like we saw yesterday in Pennsylvania, its a high risk to take when you can’t prove anyone was disenfranchised.  Civil rights groups should move along to an issue that really matters instead of spending donor dollars on something that doesn’t disenfranchise and is supported by the vast majority of Americans.

“Why Do Voters Back ID? Common Sense”

Commentary Magazine comments:

These numbers have to concern Democrats who are hoping to whip up a backlash against voter ID legislation by falsely claiming they are a new form of “Jim Crow” laws intended to foster discrimination. Indeed, given the drumbeat of incitement against voter ID laws in the mainstream media, you have to wonder why there is so much resistance to the liberal line on this topic. The answer, however, is quite simple. The public knows that claims that voter fraud is nonexistent run counter to everything they know about politicians, elections and human nature…

Interestingly enough, as the Post notes in their own analysis of the poll, a solid majority of both the elderly and the poor — groups it is believed will be impacted by such laws — also support voter ID.
