In Tennessee, photo ID law gets going without hitch

So says the Tennessean: The first day of early voting for the March 6 election also provided the first test of the state’s controversial new voter ID law, which requires voters to show photo identification at the polls. But county election officials said voters were uniformly prepared, which the Tennessee Republican Party chairman said was a testament to education efforts by Secretary of State Tre Hargett’s office.

In Minnesota, Republicans and League of Women Voters go to war over Voter ID

The author of a proposed constitutional amendment to require a photo ID when voting is offering an olive branch to the bill’s most vocal opponent.

“When this passes… I would expect the League of Women Voters to work with us,” said state Rep. Mary Kiffmeyer, Republican from Big Lake.

The League is not accepting. “If it passes the Legislature, we will continue to educate voters. If it passes [in November], we will have to take a look at both options — try to make it work or go to court,” says Laura Wang, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Minnesota.

For Minnesota Republicans, the debate over photo ID legislation has placed the League of Women Voters in the ranks of Common Cause and the ACLU. Discourse has widened into open antagonism.

“They packed a recent committee hearing to pitch lies,” is how Minnesota Majority, a pro-Republican grass roots organization, describes the League’s efforts to oppose voter ID.

Dallas, Texas courtroom: voter fraud + close election = Injustice

The Medrano family voter fraud trial begins in Dallas, Texas:

Allegations of voter fraud involving the powerful Medrano family of Dallas are playing out in a Rockwall County courthouse.

Two Medrano family members are on trial for allegedly trying to rig
an election. Many of the accusations stem from a News 8 Investigation
two years ago.

A total of seven members of the Medrano family are facing trial on
charges of illegal voting and lying to a grand jury. We first reported
on alleged voting irregularities back in the spring of 2010.

Incumbent Justice of the Peace Luis Sepulveda first filed a complaint
with state officials after losing to Carlos Medrano by just a handful
of votes.

Our investigation first revealed that two of Medrano’s nieces voted for their uncle while apparently living in another city.

One of those nieces, Veronica Medrano has since confessed to
prosecutors that they were encouraged to vote illegally by their Uncle
Carlos.

On Tuesday, their father Frank and Uncle Carlos Medrano went on trial
in Rockwall for voter fraud. Five other Medrano family members will
also stand trial on voter fraud charges in the coming weeks.
