The NAACP is hoisted on their own petard. They requested international observers because of the passage of state voter ID laws. The international observers arrived and were shocked by what they saw:
“The most often noted difference between American elections among the visitors was that in most U.S. states, voters need no identification.”
That’s funny!
The proper expression, by the way, would be “hoist by their own petard” — a petard being a primitive hand grenade. Petard is from the French for “fart”. If you are hoist by your own petard, you blew yourself up.
