Common Cause Colorado is opposing Secretary of State Gessler’s efforts to determine if illegal aliens are on the voter rolls. Gessler merely asked for the cooperation of the Department of Homeland Security to idetify if non-citizens are on Colorado voter rolls. Enter Common Cause, demanding the effort stop.
“Critics of the move agreed only U.S. citizens should vote but said Gessler is going to *extremes* during a crucial election year — in a key battleground state — to address a problem that his office so far has been *unable to quantify*.”
Well, yes – “unable to quantify” until registered voters’ names can be matched against the federal database – at which time SOS Gessler will be ABLE to quantify the problem.
In fact, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 requires that DHS-USCIS respond to inquiries from federal, state, and local agencies seeking to verify or determine the citizenship or immigration status of any individual within the jurisdiction of the agency *for any purposes authorized by law*. And that would include maintenance of the state’s voter registration rolls.
Note to Ms. Nunez: Chuck Schumer wants his talking points back when you’re done with them.
