Balloting Problems in Illinois
More info at link. “In 65 of 102 counties, judges will be forced to hand count ballots that are filled in with markers, which is expected to cause delays in counting after the 7:00 PM poll closing. Judges are encouraging the use of touch screens. As a result voting is expected to take longer.”

“Arguments Against Voter ID Don’t Measure Up”
Washington Post cites phony Brennan Center study on Voter ID
Washington Post reporter Rachel Weiner has this story on voter ID in today’s Washington Post. She cites the phony Brennan Center study statistics on the impact of voter ID. At least she cites another study in conflict with the Brennan Center study. No surprise that Weiner relies on the flawed Brennan Center study. Weiner comes from the extraordinarily biased TPM Muckraker, an organization long at odds with voter ID. TPM Muckraker has not yet even removed her from their masthead as associate news editor.
Analysis of Georgia photo ID law shows increased minority voter turnout
In both federal elections held in Georgia since its voter ID became effective, the increase in turnout of Hispanic and black voters dwarfed the increase in turnout of white voters. As shown by these data—as well as the fact that federal and state courts in Georgia dismissed lawsuits filed against the Georgia voter ID law that had claimed it was both unconstitutional and discriminatory—voter ID requirements can be easily met by almost all voters and do not have a discriminatory or disparate impact on racial minorities. Georgia’s experience also shows that the number of voters who do not already have an acceptable photo ID is very small.
DOJ has chosen to ignore the evidence of increased or no impact on voter turnout found in Section 5 and other states that require photo identification. However, it is unlikely the federal courts or the Supreme Court will ignore such highly relevant evidence.

Voter ID constitutional amendment headed to Minnesota House floor
Governors cannot veto amendments proposed by a majority of the Legislature, so Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton would be powerless to stop the GOP initiative. He vetoed a Republican photo ID bill last year. House Rules Committee Chairman Matt Dean, R-Dellwood, said he did not know when the full House would vote on the amendment. A similar measure is pending in the Senate Rules Committee. Republicans have been advocating a photo ID requirement for years, arguing it is needed to ensure the integrity of elections.

“Supreme Court could be receptive to Texas’ challenge of Voting Rights Act”
Texas’ push for a tough new voter ID law puts it at the center of a
high-stakes battle over a civil rights landmark, just as the Supreme
Court grows more receptive to ending decades of automatic federal
oversight of local election rules. The last time the court looked at the Voting Rights Act — three years ago, in a case involving an Austin utility district — only one justice, conservative Clarence Thomas,
was ready to toss it out as unconstitutional. But all nine agreed that
“serious constitutional questions” hang over the landmark 1965 law,
which singles out nine states and parts of seven others for special
scrutiny based on their history of discriminating against minorities.
“Even the more liberal justices agreed that there were serious questions,” said Richard Pildes, a professor at New York University School
of Law who has written extensively about the election law. “Given the
marker they laid down in that earlier case, it’s hard to imagine the
court not returning to the issue.”
