Augusta County to DOJ: You Can’t Come In

Augusta County, Virginia has figured it out.  Many counties can tell the DOJ Voting Section to pound sand and not allow them into the polls to collect evidence to sue the counties.  Augusta County (VA) told the DOJ they can’t come and watch.  Good for them. Free copies of Injustice are on the way to the local library. For decades the Justice Department has enjoyed tethered goat counties, counties which foolishly invite DOJ to watch inside their polls, and then find themselves sued.  To be sure, some counties don’t have the power to do this.  But many do.  Virginia and Florida are two such places that have told the DOJ voting section they may not monitor elections.  What might be the common fact between the two states?  Anyone… anyone?

Important: if you are a local or state election official, there is often no legal obligation to allow the Justice Department to monitor your elections inside the polls.  Almost always it is a sign evidence is being collected which may result in your state or county being sued.  Any official that allows this to happen is acting against their own interest, period.  If you think the monitors will view the same set of facts as you do, you are wrong.

Election Assistance Commission spending $1 million/yr. renting office space with no commissioners, no leadership, and “nothing to do”

At the recent markup hearing (video@ 01:01:45) of legislation eliminating the Election Assistance Commission (EAC), Rep. Gingrey of Georgia indicated that the EAC was renting prime DC office space for $1 million a year despite having no commissioners, no general counsel, no executive director and few staff members.  He claimed the EAC has “nothing to do except to pay for empty office space.”  Ouch!

“New York Election Board Drags out Ancient Machines”

The New York Times: New York City voters should be prepared to cast their ballots once again this fall on voting machines invented in the 19th century. State legislators were apparently close to a deal on Wednesday afternoon to allow New York City’s clueless board of elections to use the old mechanical machines for the city’s September 10 primary.

This is happening because New York City officials can’t figure out how to use newfangled machines with paper ballots and scanners — a system used with success across the country.
New Yorkers will vote in much the same way they did half a century ago.

“FBI agents raid offices of California Democrat and Latino caucus”

“Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation served search warrants in the State Capitol at the office of Sen. Ron Calderon and in the Legislative Office Building at the Latino Legislative Caucus office,” said Tony Beard, chief sergeant at arms for the California Senate, in a statement reported by CNN. “Those warrants are sealed by order of the federal court. Therefore, we have no further information. The Senate has and will continue to fully cooperate with the agents in this matter.”
