Longtime aide to NYC comptroller testifies without immunity to illegal acts

New Times Times: A longtime aide to John C. Liu, the New York City comptroller and current Democratic candidate for
mayor, testified on Wednesday that she had offered to reimburse donors
for their contributions to Mr. Liu’s campaign, a tactic that prosecutors
have said was part of an illegal fund-raising strategy used by some Liu
aides.

…Judge Richard J. Sullivan of Federal District Court asked Ms. Lee, out
of the jury’s presence, if she understood that she had no immunity and
that her testimony could potentially “give you some exposure to criminal
prosecution.” Ms. Lee said she understood both points and was prepared
to go forward.

DC court to hear Beaumont School District election case

The Beaumont school district will not have a planned election in May,
as the Circuit Court in the nation’s capital agreed to hear a case on
whether the election violates the Voting Rights Act.

“There will be no election in May,” Judge Ellen Huelle said, a member
of the three-judge panel hearing the case. “You’re going to have an
election in November for sure,” she said later.

North Carolina photo voter ID passes with some Democratic support

In North Carolina, a photo voter ID bill cleared the state House and heads to the state Senate.   It appears that based on the partisan makeup of the legislature (43D-77R), the bill passed with a small number of Democrats supporting the measure.  Sort of like the Carolina Blue Blue Dog Democratic caucus.

Presenting photo identification before being able to vote in North
Carolina moved a step closer to reality Wednesday when the House
approved a Republican-backed proposal.House Bill 589 passed on an 81-36 vote and now moves to the Senate.

“Our
system of government depends on open and honest elections,” said Rep.
David Lewis, R-Harnett. “Having people prove they are who they say they
are makes sense.”

The bill, dubbed the Voter Information
Verification Act, or VIVA, would require IDs with every election held
after January 2016. It would allow people to present various
state-issued IDs, such as public university IDs and state employee
IDs, but private university IDs would not qualify.

Process: Democrats Seek to Reverse GOP Win in OH House Race

“Democrats challenge election results of 98th House District”.  Apparently a voter not knowing their own birthdate is a “hypertechnical” reason to invalidate their ballot.  The story:

Arguing that votes were tossed out for “hyper-technical” reasons, such as filling in an incorrect birth date or address, House Democrats are pushing to allow more votes to be counted in a race they lost in November by a razor-thin margin.

The 98th House District, which includes all of Tuscarawas and most of Holmes County, was decided by eight votes out of more than 46,700 cast, with Rep. Al Landis, R-Dover, edging out Democrat Joshua O’Farrell.

In a rare procedural move not seen in a century, O’Farrell, with backing from House Democrats, challenged the certified results, asking the full Ohio House to allow 39 rejected votes to be counted, and allow the review of another 13 votes that, because they were not clearly marked, may not have been counted.
