The Obama campaign raised a vast haul of money from individuals who must not be reported or disclosed in FEC reports. Naturally this means that the usual speech regulators and campaign finance crusaders have fallen silent. What is interesting about this haul is that since so much of the money not subject to FEC reporting comes in through the internet, it raises questions about who is actually making the contributions, and whether they are legitimate contributors.
In 2008, the Obama campaign failed to implement safeguards against illegal contributions by foreigners. Whether or not those failures have been remedied remains to be seen. I’m sure the usual speech regulators and campaign finance crusaders in academia will be all over the issue shortly.
Alabama redistricted maps for state legislature precleared by DOJ
The U.S. Department of Justice has given preclearance to new legislative districts for use in the 2014 elections. The
decision was a victory for legislative Republicans who were drawing
their first lines as majority party. However, the plan still faces a
lawsuit from African-American lawmakers who claim the districts dilute
the voting influence of minorities. …Democrats have complained the new lines pack African-American voters
into the existing minority districts. White districts would have
fewer minority voters, which along with other boundary changes, would
favor the election of Republicans, Democrats complained.
“I’ve
never seen such a racially gerrymandered plan as this one,” Senate
Minority Leader Roger Bedford, D-Russellville, said this afternoon.
“They are trying to make white Democrats extinct. They are packing the black districts,” Bedford said.

Argument for voter ID in Minnesota
In the Star-Tribune, an pro-voter ID amendment editorial entitled “Keep it easy to vote by ensuring ballot integrity.”
Can the level of fraud, no matter how small, affect the outcome of
elections in our state and elsewhere in the nation? Absolutely.
The function of requiring a photo ID isn’t intended to block anyone’s
right to vote. It’s to continue to ensure the integrity of the
electoral process. Ultimately, it’s the right of every voter who casts a
legitimate vote to never have it canceled out by those who — no matter
how many or how few — cast an illegitimate vote. Minnesota is a place where common sense tends to outweigh senselessness.
SOS Gessler “Left doesn’t care about voter fraud”
That at the Denver Post and more:
Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler Gessler, a Republican, made his comments during a panel discussion
told a conservative audience Thursday that his critics really don’t
care about voter fraud and are “willing to lie” and “play the racism
card.”
Thursday titled, “Stealing Elections: What the Left Doesn’t Want You to
Know About Voter Fraud,” held at a gathering of the Conservative
Political Action Conference in Denver
and:
“They (the
left) don’t care if they (would-be voters) are non-citizens,” he told
hundreds in the audience. “They’ll register them to vote, and if that
noncitizen registers and then votes, they suffer serious consequences —
criminal prosecution, loss of the ability to ever become a citizen —
but the voter registration drive never suffers any of those
consequences.

Fairfax Virginia “Cicada Voters”
Imagine my surprise walking through the lobby of my office and seeing our good friend Cameron Quinn smiling at me from the front page of the Mt. Vernon Gazette. Kudos to Cameron for inventing a term to describe a voter who slumbers for years thinking nothing has changed. The full story is at this link.
