The Justice Department is opposing changes in Florida voting
procedures and says it wants a trial in the dispute, a move that could
impact the state’s August primary elections.

In court papers filed
late Friday night, Florida officials say they strongly oppose having a
trial and noted that the federal court hearing the case in the District
of Columbia wants sufficient time to issue a decision before the August
primaries. The state is seeking court approval for changes that shorten
the time for voter registration groups turning in registration forms to
48 hours and that narrow the time frame for early voting to 10 days
before election day.

In Florida, DOJ is again using Section 5 as a delaying tactic, just as they did in the Texas redistricting litigation. They certainly don’t want the issues to be appealed to or resolved by the Supreme Court prior to the November election.

A copy of the photo ID confirming identity provided with the absentee ballot may have avoided this illegal voter impersonation of a legitimate voter that was apparently used by another person attempting to defraud the system.  Link.

79% of Nebraska citizens support photo ID yet the Democrats threaten to continue its filibuster.  Wonder where the New Yorker Bob Kerrey comes down on the issue. 

A July 2010 Caltech/MIT study examining support for election reform in the United States reported that 79 percent of Nebraskans supported requiring ID. No other reform measure came even close. (Other categories: Internet voting, 24 percent; vote by mail, 14 percent; automatic registration, 36 percent; election day registration, 37 percent; election day holiday, 50 percent; election day on the weekend, 38 percent).

Once again, the successful registration of a non-human shows the lack of verification or basic scrutiny provided to incoming registration applications.  Don’t even try to mislead Americans that some rigorous process of verification is established to confirm the identity and basic information on the voter.  NADA. Requiring a photo ID prior to registration would prevent this type of canine travesty. 

An Albuquerque, New Mexico man says he successfully registered his dog to vote in Bernalillo County.  The dog owner said he saw a voter registration booth on the University of New Mexico’s campus a few weeks ago and decided to see how easy it would be to register his dog to vote.

He said he was trying to expose the problems with the registration system. He received the dog’s voter registration card in the mail Wednesday.

“They should verify. Somebody should have verified this information and somebody should have come out and took a look at exactly who it was. But I made up a birth date, and I made up a social security number and I had a voter registration card in my hand for Buddy two weeks later,” the dog owner said.

Despite multiple Alabama counties failing to mail ballots on time in 2010, DOJ decided not to sue the counties involved or take any steps to correct the institutional deficiencies in the Alabama electoral system. In fact, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Tom Perez told NASS that DOJ refused to sue the counties involved; instead relying on pressuring or suing the Secretaries of State.  The only problem is that the Secretaries of State have little to no role in the mailing of ballots.  That responsibility resides at the local level.  So is anyone surprised that the same structural problems remain in 2012 with now 25 counties failing…. again.

This is a sad day.  Andrew was a friend, and also a husband and father of 4.  I was with him last week in Los Angeles plotting the latest.  He was a whirldwind.  He worked on Injustice with me, providing a jacket blurb.  I wrote in my acknowledgements: “For their support and vision, Richard Pollock, Roger Simon, and everyone at Pajamas Media who are reconstructing the news model deserve thanks. So does Andrew Breitbart, soul brother and pied piper.” Andrew wasn’t always right, and he knew his own limitations.  But he was always in the fight.  He was funny, witty, and loved good music.  He was a joy to be around and will be missed for many reasons.  (Update, my PJ Rule of Law Column:  Andrew Breitbart Ignored the Pain.) Looks like photo ID opponents are close to reaching the 1% they so detest.  The story on the MTSU poll at the link finds the voter photo ID law has strong support across the state of Tennessee.  

 Buddy.  Not long ago, the civil rights groups (and others) were badgering some in New Mexico for trying to verify if registered voters were legitimate.
